Dark Side - Rim Trail:  I rode this on Sunday, Feb. 11.  The trail is in really good shape, apart from some sections along the cliff face at the beginning (just after the telescopes) where scree has covered the trail and you have to dismount, and a few ot...  moreDark Side - Rim Trail:  I rode this on Sunday, Feb. 11.  The trail is in really good shape, apart from some sections along the cliff face at the beginning (just after the telescopes) where scree has covered the trail and you have to dismount, and a few other sections later on with the same.  No poison oak, no poodle-dog bush at the moment.  The last time I rode the trail, it was very overgrown, but everything has been cut back.  Almost no one appears to have been riding Rim Trail.  I only saw evidence of bike traffic once I hit the Gabrielino Trail at Newcomb Pass.  The middle and last thirds of Rim Trail are flowy and fast, with a fair amount of acorns.  If you have not done it before, note that it is almost all off-camber.  The section from Newcomb Pass to Sturtevant Camp is a bit more technical, and really fast and fun.       less

    kkrr Trail report.  Dark Side - Rim Trail.   Very overgrown until Sturtevant Camp.  Lots of downed trees on the trail.  Poison oak and poodle-dog bush out in force.

    kkrr Apr. 16, 2016 Trail report.  Darkside:  Rim Trail to Newcomb Pass to Chantry.  Great ride, although the first mile is a very narrow, off-camber trail along rock walls with a steep drop-off on the downhill side and rock walls ready to catch your handlebar ...  moreApr. 16, 2016 Trail report.  Darkside:  Rim Trail to Newcomb Pass to Chantry.  Great ride, although the first mile is a very narrow, off-camber trail along rock walls with a steep drop-off on the downhill side and rock walls ready to catch your handlebar on the uphill side.  Once past that, the trail is really fast and flowy with a few technical sections to keep it interesting.  The Rim Trail stays high on the Darkside.  It is mostly in the trees so it stays cool.  Didn't see another person until Sturtevant Camp.  There was a bit of poison oak, but not too bad.       less
